WHAT IS A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION & WHAT DOES IT ASSESS?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive process that helps understand how a person’s brain is functioning across different areas of thinking, learning, and behavior. Through interviews, clinical observation, and specialized testing, areas such as memory, attention, concentration, language, learning, processing speed, executive functioning (such as organization and planning), visual-spatial skills, and emotional and behavioral functioning are evaluated.

Neuropsychological evaluations can be helpful for both children and adults. In children, they can help identify difficulties related to learning, ADHD, autism, memory problems, information processing, or emotional and behavioral challenges that may be affecting academic and social functioning. In adults, they can help better understand changes in memory, attention, cognitive functioning, recovery after an injury or medical condition, and emotional difficulties that impact work, relationships, or daily life. The results help identify strengths and areas of need and can be used to develop individualized recommendations and supports for home, school, work, and clinical treatment.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION?

The evaluation process begins with an initial consultation in which I meet with the individual and/or their family to better understand their concerns, current difficulties, and what they hope to learn from the evaluation. This helps guide the assessment process and ensures that the testing is tailored to the specific needs of each person.

As part of the evaluation, I may also review relevant documents such as medical records, school records, prior evaluations, or other helpful documentation that can provide a better understanding of the individual’s functioning and areas of difficulty.

Testing is conducted in person only at my office located in Berkeley, California. The evaluation consists of a variety of activities and standardized tests designed to assess different areas of cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Depending on the referral questions and the individual’s needs, the evaluation may be completed over one or multiple sessions.

Once the evaluation is completed, I carefully score and interpret the results and prepare a comprehensive report summarizing the findings, diagnoses (if applicable), strengths, areas of difficulty, and individualized recommendations. I then meet with the client and/or family to explain the results in an easy-to-understand manner, answer questions, and discuss recommendations and next steps for support and treatment.
